Liner notes:
The first International Chicken Eaters convention was held in Coffeyville, Kansas, in 1987. The event organizers anticipated only 200 attendees. When an estimated 4,000 fans showed up, by the final day of the event registrars were issuing ID cards made from torn scraps of wrapping paper and finally some fans were let in for free: “We ran out of everything” Trent Richards, president of the American Chicken Council, remembers. An article in the Coffeyville Today from 1989 describes the first convention:
“They were coming from all over, Arizona, California, Canada. There was a whole busload from Toronto. On the third day the event went out of hand: the mood was exhilarating, and when Trent Richards spoke, the crowd exploded. The fans even burst out chanting “God bless roasted chicken”. Suddenly it seemed possible that eating chicken was not dead after all.”
