Veneer began life in late 2013 as a response to a blog I had written for the track “This is Us.” Unusually, I had the track title before I began to compose the music but the combination of the title and the blog gave me a framework on which to hang music and a sentiment for the basis of the sound. “This is Us” took three months to complete but paved the way for the sound that became the album “Veneer.” All tracks were composed and produced in my compact software-based studio using a wide variety of synthesizers and effects, which I have built up over the past four years using Mu-Lab as my workstation of choice.

Towards the end of the creation of the album I was fortunate to be invited to perform live as part of the Del Boca Vista community.
This lead me to make contact with Fluidizzed and The Fractalist; it was immediately clear that Fluidizzed's photography and The Fractalist's animations were the perfect match for my music. These final elements completed “Veneer” in a way I could not have foreseen.

As I mastered the album it occurred to me that it would be a terrible loss if I didn't give some of the soundscapes a life of their own and so they became the final four tracks on the album. “Veneer” took seventeen months to complete and grew out of more than thirty demo tracks. It used far more synthesisers and effects than I can remember and involved the work of two very talented visual artists, with whom I have been fortunate to collaborate. Blume March 2015
