Notes
"The Hidden" is a fascinating Triple Bath debut for the quartet of Mike Johnston, Mike Gilmore, Mike Khoury and Kirk Lucas - musicians originating from the improvised-jazz scene of the period 1975 - 1985 in Michigan. On this disc, Johnston (on double bass, shenhai and wood flutes) and Gilmore (on vibraphone, marimba, saz, cheng, percussion), music fellows since 1976 (after forming the collective Northwoods Improvisers), are joined by their long-time collaborator Lucas (on violoncello) and by (younger) Khoury (on violin). The chamber ensemble's interaction heads for exploration of a wide range of options in jazz by spicing this base with ethnologic musical elements of Asia, Middle East and Africa. Altogether, an exotic confluence of free improvisation and avant-garde composition. This recording is surely to be highly appreciated by listeners loving genres as diverse as jazz standards, ethnic music and harsh noise.
