My turntable does not have an automatic arm, so when a record ends, it keeps spinning with the needle in the locked matrix groove. The sound that is created by this movement is generally a warm, crunchy rhythmic beat. I often find that I don't realize when a record ends; instead, I find myself overcome by the repetitive sound that the matrix groove and needle are creaing. It's a magical sound, an unintended rhythm that could easily go unnoticed but when acknowledged, offers much to consider. Each record has its own distinctive matrix beat. As a result of the lock groove, the label on the record, dust, or wear and tear, some truly interesting unintentional sounds are formed. 'Out Of Step' is one of several pieces utilizing this phenomena as a basis for my sound investigations and experiments. - Chris Duncan 2013.
'Out of Step' is a fifteen minute composition made from looping the subtle variations of speed and tone of the matrix "beat" of Minor Threat's 'Out of Step'.
Minor Threat - Out of Step is an extremely important record.
'Out of Step' is the fourth recording in a series of sound experiments made by bay area artist Chris Duncan, in which he employs repetition and accumulation as his conceptual framework.
