CYMBAL/SYMBOL is the third recording in a series of sound experiments made by bay area artist Chris Duncan, in which he employs repetition and accumulation as his conceptual framework.
CYMBAL/SYMBOL is a sound recording made from a plaster cast of a 23" ride cymbal with a piezo mic embedded in it and a looping station. For this experiment, the cymbal stand hole was covered, the cymbal flipped over and used as a mold for the plaster. The shape of the object is the negative space of the cymbal.
I have been considering how to utilize "negative" sound for my investigations and experiments. 'Negative' is defined here not as unwanted or bad but originating from an object not intended for sound or, a sound that reveals itself unintentionally. The piece is an exercise in chance- to see and hear what occurs with an open loop and a pair of mallets striking the plaster form. A slow build, CYMBAL/SYMBOL eventually layers into a complex cacophony of percussive, un-intended tones. - Chris Duncan 2013.
